Since moving to Birmingham and settling into a very different way of life (very different from the West Country way of life!) I have been reflecting on my work as a Counsellor and noticing the striking differences in the problems and issues faced by individuals and groups of people. This is both challenging and intriguing where I am finding myself reflecting on my practice as a Counsellor when hearing these issues. I have been working with young people dealing with cultural difficulties, forced marriages and domestic violence in the family and really noticing the different survival mechanisms that these young people have had to develop at such a young age. These survival mechanisms can have such an influence and impact on the way we lead our lives as adults, and are often functioning at a sub-conscious level.
